Profile:
David William FAURE, BA (University of Hong Kong), Ph.D. (Princeton University), is Director of the Centre for China Studies, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
He is a social historian of China and Hong Kong. He has written about the history of the lineage institution in the Pearl River delta, Chinese business history and Hong Kong history. He has taught at the University of Hong Kong, Indiana University, and from 1990-2006 was University Lecturer in Modern Chinese History and Fellow, St. Antony's College, University of Oxford. In recent years, he has been conducting a project under the title The Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society, which has given him the opportunity to see many parts of China. He is currently editor of the journal Lishi renlei xue (Journal of History and Anthropology) and Director of the Chinese University of Hong Kong -Sun Yat-sen University Centre for Historical Anthropology. Among his recent books is Emperor and Ancestor: State and Lineage in South China, Stanford: Stanford University Press 2007.
